“The Green Business Alliance has been instrumental in keeping InBio on track with our sustainability goals since becoming founding members in 2016 and has provided invaluable expertise and guidance over the years. Their ability to create a local business community with a singular shared goal of sustainability has been inspirational. It has been a pleasure to be able to celebrate the successes of fellow GBA members and to be a part of the new Champions group after hitting our own carbon emission reduction goals of 30%. ”

About INBIO

InBio is committed to positive environmental outcomes as a biotechnology company, as scientists and as community members. This all-encompassing mission has led InBio to become regional leaders in carbon emission reduction, laboratory waste reduction and through our award-winning Green Benefits program established for employees in 2022. It has been a long-standing principle of InBio leadership to lead by example and Dr. Martin Chapman, President and CEO of InBio, understands that the investment of time and resources can have exponential benefits for the company, employees, and the larger community. As a biotechnology company with a global client base, leadership, and employees at InBio’s two locations in Charlottesville, VA and Cardiff, Wales, are united in the commitment to be environmentally responsible members in our local communities and a positive example for our clients around the world.

Being a Leader Means Leading Outside the Lab as well as Inside

Five years ago, InBio fully renovated and moved into its current headquarters location on Harris Street in Charlottesville. The 12,000 square foot office and lab space was outfitted with four new rooftop HVAC units with Intelligent Equipment® to monitor energy consumption. The entire space was designed with high efficiency plumbing and lighting fixtures throughout. In 2018, a 155.25 kWp solar array was installed that provides approximately 40% of energy used. InBio has been actively participating in the Charlottesville sustainability and green business community since 2013, winning two awards (2014 and 2019) as part of the Better Business Challenge.

Why the GBA Is Important to Us

The Green Business Alliance is proving invaluable access to knowledge, resources, and community to organizations in the region. The ability to reach out to the GBA network for informed guidance on a wide range of topics gives Inbio a clear path to continue the mission for increased sustainability.

InBio believes in creating a company culture of sustainability. Providing employees with incentives for electric vehicles, home solar arrays, and green living will be an ongoing focus. Supporting employees to be committed to sustainability at home as well at work is a key foundation to create a lasting impact.  As a biotech research and manufacturing facility, reduction of energy use is a challenge with the amount of equipment that requires constant and high levels of power. To meet energy reduction goals while not compromising operations, InBio is assessing potential improvements to the building including new energy efficient windows and HVAC system modifications.
